Modifications and Repairs

Our pedorthic clinic offers a range of shoe modifications designed to enhance comfort, address specific foot issues, and improve overall foot health. These modifications can be applied internally or externally, depending on individual needs.  Some of the examples are:

  • Wedges are inserts placed into the heel of the orthotic or shoe to align the calcaneus and mid-foot, reducing strain on joints, ligaments, and tendons.
  • Heel/Shoe Raises balance leg lengths and align the pelvis, and can be added inside the shoe or externally to the heel.
  • Rocker Soles/Bars improve gait and reduce pressure by modifying the shoe’s sole: Rocker Bottoms feature a rounded sole from heel to toe for improved foot roll and stability; Rocker Soles roll from mid to forefoot, based on the apex line placement; Heel Rockers reduce heel impact and assist with a stiff rear foot; Metatarsal Rocker Soles alleviate pressure on metatarsal heads with an apex line behind them; and Hallux Rigidus/Limitus Rocker Soles include a cutout for limited mobility in the 1st MPJ.
  • Metatarsal Domes relieve pressure from specific metatarsal heads or the transverse arch.
  • Velcro Conversions replace traditional laces with velcro strips for easier adjustment and fastening. Flares are strips of material added to the sole or heel of the shoe on the medial or lateral side to enhance stability and balance.
  • Relasting modifies the shoe’s shape and width by changing the existing shoe to a different last, accommodating wide or deformed feet.
